Sunshine Foundation for Good commissions 23rd RO Plant, expands safe water access to more communities

The Sunshine Foundation for Good (SFG), the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Sunshine Holdings PLC, has opened its 23rd Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment plant at Helambawatawana Sri Saddhananda Maha Vidyalaya, Chilaw.

The new plant, vested with the school and surrounding community, will serve over 1,300 students and more than 2,000 villagers who previously faced significant challenges in accessing safe water. By addressing this urgent need, the initiative supports healthier lives, reduces the spread of waterborne diseases such as Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Origin (CKDu), and eases the financial burden families face from purchasing water and seeking costly medical treatment.

Since its inception, Diyasarana, a community outreach initiative of SFG dedicated to providing safe drinking water, has improved access for more than 35,000 Sri LankansTo date, 23 RO plants have been installed in regions across the North, North Central, North Western, Southern, Uva, and Central provinces. Each plant is capable of processing 5,000–10,000 litres of water daily, providing sufficient supply for schools and villages while prioritising areas where children and families face the highest risk from unsafe water sources.

The initiative also directly supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s progress toward universal access to safe water.

“The launch of our 23rd RO plant in Chilaw reflects Sunshine Holdings’ long-term commitment to community well-being,”

“Through Diyasarana, each installation not only provides safe drinking water but also strengthens health, resilience, and progress in communities, reaffirming our role in nation-building and creating a healthier, sustainable future for Sri Lanka.””
